Roman age- Rituals funerarys

Both incineration and burial were rituals practised in San Giovanni in Compito. In particular, incinerating corpses was a widespread practise. The corpse was first burned, then the ashes were buried with some objects belonging to the dead. Many of the burned corpses found in the Compito were located near to their personal objects. The most relevant finds relating to this ritual are: a stone cinerary urn with a lead cover , and a marble plate . The poorest tombs were indicated by a simple sign .
Only years later did burial became a more popular ritual. Corpses were put in a tomb facing the sky and heading west. There are many records of this practice in the Compito area: funerary equipment and tombs were found on the side of Via Emilia road. The road from the Compito to the Augusto bridge was disseminated from big tombs. The so called Petrone (big stone) and 2 big pink marble plates, which are now used inside the church, were found in that track.
